About ConFusion

ConFusion is a local/regional science fiction convention based in the Metro Detroit area. Starting in 1974 as the “AA Relax-I-Con,” ConFusion has been held every year since first proposed by the old University of Michigan Science Fiction Club. Later dubbed the Stilyagi Air Corps, the group has remained involved in some capacity or another with putting on the convention. In recent years, a new generation of fans have taken over the responsibility of the convention and carry on this Michigan  tradition every January. Now under the umbrella of the Ann Arbor Science Fiction Association [AASFA], a Michigan non-profit corporation, the con is poised to continue well into the future.

The convention regularly draws between 600-1000 attendees, and has welcomed as Guests of Honor some of the brightest lights of Science Fiction and Fantasy publishing, past and present. Honored Guests have included Frederick Pohl, Poul Anderson, CJ Cherryh, Joe Haldeman, Lois McMaster Bujold, George R. R. Martin, and Patrick Rothfuss, among many others. ConFusion also invites a Science Guest of Honor every year, and another guest drawn from one of the other categories of programming typically found at ConFusion: Music, Gaming, Costuming, and Art. Also, every year the fan community nominates and votes for a Fan Guest of Honor, usually a member of the community who has put in a lot of time working on the convention or otherwise being active as a fan. Each year, a ceremony of some kind or another is held at the convention, honoring that Fan and all the previous honored Fan Guests before them.

Traditionally, ConFusion has been held either the third or fourth weekend in January, with the third weekend being very popular as it coincides with the Martin Luther King Jr. Day long weekend. The current home of the convention is the Dearborn Doubletree Hotel in Detroit, and has previously been held in the Detroit Marriott in Troy and the Van Dyke Park Hotel & Suites in Warren. Convention planning is year-round, picking up shortly after the end of the convention. Volunteers are always welcome, so please consult our Contact page to see open ConCom positions or find contact information for the person heading up the area you are interested in volunteering in.
